SEVENTH INNING RETCH DEPT.
Earlier today, while clearing out a space in the MAD stockroom for his morning nap, Associate Art Director Ryan Flanders stumbled upon this original art of Alfred E. Neuman wearing a New York Mets uniform. This image (most likely painted by Bob Clarke over a photostat of Norman Mingo's smirking Alfred) appeared in MAD #136, from July 1970 — less than a year after the Mets won their first World Series.
As baseball fans and all New Yorkers know, the 2015 World Series begins tonight — and the Mets are once again battling for the championship! Will the discovery of this classic MAD art be a fortuitous boon or a harbinger of doom for the boys from Queens? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear — if the Mets prevail, MAD will happily field any offers from multimillion dollar sports franchises seeking our endorsement.
