The Gay Athlete: LeBron James

MISTAKING JAMES DEPT.

Washington Wizards reserve center Jason Collins made history this week when he announced that he was gay — becoming the first active, openly-gay NBA player. We completely support Collins’ brave choice to go public — but, c’mon, he’s a fifth-stringer for the Washington Wizards. It’s a cover story for Sports Illustrated, for crying out loud! If they really wanted to move some issues, they should have gone for some bigger star power.

The State of the Upton Address

UNDRESS THE NATION DEPT

Yesterday, Kate Upton was announced as the cover girl of Sport Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue! And tonight, President Obama delivers the State of the Union Address! Guess which of these things more Americans care about? C’mon Barry, it’s time to give the people what they want!

"The New Yorker" Rips Off MAD?

CONDÉ NASTY DEPT.

It was recently brought to our attention that the February 4, 2013 issue of The New Yorker bears more than a passing resemblance to MAD #293 from March 1990. Even more disturbing: this issue of The New Yorker is chock-full of “original” articles such as “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions at a MoMA Opening”, “A Peek Behind the Scenes at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center” and “Thurber vs. Thurber”. On the positive side: David Remnick’s Fold-In is actually pretty good.

Upcoming "Newsweek" Presidential Covers

FAIL TO THE CHIEF DEPT.

Building on Toni Morrison declaring that Bill Clinton was "The First Black President," Newsweek this week declared Barack Obama "The First Gay President" on its cover. Given all the press that her magazine received for the cover, it's only a matter of time before Newsweek editor and media opportunist Tina Brown will try to duplicate this success with other ridiculous presidential covers.
