Michele Bachmann Quits Congress: MAD Will Miss Her!

CLASSIC MAD DEPT.

Whoever said, “Dying is easy, comedy is hard” died before Michele Bachmann ran for public office. The four-term, factually-challenged Congresswoman from Minnesota was a gift to comedy writers everywhere — her gaffes providing daily fodder for pundits, late-night comedians and yes, even MAD. Yesterday, Mrs. Bachmann announced that she would not seek another term in Congress. Her departure from the political scene will once again make comedy hard. Good bye, Mrs. Bachmann. And thanks.

10th Anniversary of “Mission Accomplished" Accomplished

CLASSIC MAD DEPT.

Ten years ago today, President George W. Bush dressed up as a fighter pilot (the only incident of presidential cosplay we know of), landed on an aircraft carrier, and declared “Mission Accomplished” in the Iraq War — which actually didn’t end until 2011. So, as Dubya celebrates the opening of his Presidential Library, we celebrate with the cover of MAD #437, on which we anointed his premature declaration of victory as one of The 20 Dumbest Things of the Year for 2003.

Lance Armstrong Comes Clean: Cheatings from France

CLASSIC MAD DEPT.

Yesterday, Lance Armstrong finally came clean and admitted to being a lying, cheating, drug-using weasel. After years of steadfast denials, what prompted this sudden act of truthfulness? Some say it was the overwhelming evidence compiled against him. We say the tipping point for Lance clearly came after he appeared in the piece below as one of 2012's "20 Dumbest People, Events and Things" in MAD #519 — on sale now!

BP Pleads Guilty — MAD Told You So!

CLASSIC MAD DEPT.

In December 2010, BP earned the top spot in MAD’s “20 Dumbest People, Events and Things” with their horrific oil rig explosion and the disastrous oil spill that followed in the Gulf of Mexico. Today, BP finally admitted their guilt, agreed to pay $4.5 billion in fines and pled guilty to 14 criminal charges. A small bit of justice for the 11 people killed in the explosion and the millions more whose lives were disrupted or forever ruined by BP’s gross incompetence.

Classic MAD: NHL Lockout 2004

Classic MAD Dept.

Bad news! The NHL has announced a league-wide lock-out! This news affects hockey fans the most — so, on the upside, at least the number of victims is limited. We just hope that you can find some comfort in this classic MAD piece about 2004’s NHL lockout!
