MAD Founder William M. Gaines celebrates 91st Birthday Quietly

BEHIND THE COMMEMORATE BALL DEPT.

Today marks the 91st birthday of MAD founder and original publisher William M. Gaines! We chose not to bake a birthday cake, because with 91 candles, it would contribute to global warming! (Also, he passed away in 1992.) Instead, we direct those who want to read more about the most unlikely and eccentric businessman ever to read The MAD World of William M. Gaines, written by longtime MAD writer (and a bit of an eccentric himself), Frank Jacobs! It’s available at Wowio.com! Tell them The Idiotical sent you!

MAD #519 Arrives on Stands Tomorrow

Each December, MAD MAGAZINE releases its “20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things” of the year issue. As ESPN’s PLAYBOOK revealed, this year’s edition features a hilarious cover starring MAD’s iconic poster boy Alfred E. Neuman as athlete Lance Armstrong. As for what’s inside the issue, well…that’s a whole ‘nother story.

“Every year MAD scours the news for the ‘20 Dumbest People, Events and Things’ issue,” stated MAD Editor John Ficarra. “This year, try as we might, we couldn’t get it down to under 21. That should tell you all you need to know about 2012.  From politics, to sports to pop culture, the dumbest list was more plentiful than empty vodka bottles in Lindsay Lohan’s recycling bin. (Just kidding – she doesn’t recycle!) We hope that everyone buys this issue. It’s their last chance to do something dumb before 2013.”

For exclusive previews of MAD #519, check out some of the items that made the list as revealed by SPACE.COM (featuring an interview with legendary MAD artist Al Jaffee!), THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, THE HUFFINGTON POST, MAXIM, POLITICO, WIRED's GEEKDAD, MTV GEEK, CNET, POP MATTERS, CRAVE ONLINE, COMPLEX MAGAZINE, ZAP 2 IT and TECH CRUNCH.

And if you’re a MAD fan and/or laughed at any of the above features, don’t forget to take advantage of MAD’s 60th anniversary subscription deal! For just $12.99, you can get a year of MAD (6 issues) – that’s 35% off regular subscription price, 64% off the cover price, and 100% more than not subscribing at all!

MAD #519 will be available on newsstands tomorrow.
