Poster Illustrator Pays Homage to Spy vs. Spy

For Your Spies Only Dept.

Last year was Spy vs. Spy's 50th anniversary and MAD fans everywhere celebrated in their own unique ways. (You may recall that we asked oodles of incredibly talented people to customize Spy toys for us, with outstanding results!)

L.A.-based illustrator DomNX paid tribute to five decades of Antonio Prohias' devious duo with the beautifully designed image below. (Who knew the Spies' black and white uniforms would coordinate so nicely with slate blue?)

When you’re done admiring this, you can check out tons more of DomNX’s fantastic artwork at his website here!

Spy vs. Spy Art Competition at SCAD

One of the highlights of the “SCAD MAD MAD MAD Weekend,” hosted last weekend by the Southeastern Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society at the Savannah College of Art and Design, was a “Spy vs. Spy” competition organized by Anthony Fisher, Chairman of the school’s Sequential Arts Department. Students were instructed to immerse themselves in the work of “Spy” creator Antonio Prohias, and then come up with their best black-and-white take on the eternal antagonists. Sixteen entries made the finals, which were then judged on Friday by the event’s guests of honor, MAD legends Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Nick Meglin, Paul Coker, Sergio Aragonés, and Tom Richmond, as well as MAD Art Director Sam Viviano. Here are the three winners:

First Place: Undergraduate Meaghan “Meg” Casey

Check out Meg's website here!

Below is a lovely photo of her with some of the attending members of "The Usual Gang of Idiots" in Savannah.

Unearthed: Original Antonio Prohias Sketch for MAD #109!

In our ongoing effort to clean out the MAD stockroom, look what we found — the original Antonio Prohias sketch for the cover of MAD #109, March 1967! It's never been seen anywhere by anyone other than the old MAD staff at the time: Al Feldstein, Nick Meglin, Jerry DeFuccio, John Putnam and Lenny "The Beard" Brenner.

The excavation continues. Check back again for more lost MAD memorabilia!

Here's the final cover, painted by Norman Mingo:

The Top Secret Spy Vs. Spy Toy Project Poster

We know you've enjoyed seeing the custom Spy Vs. Spy toys over the last few weeks. Of course, we think they're absolutely amazing — so amazing, in fact, that we've featured all of them on a commemorative two-sided poster in our current issue, MAD #511! Go get a nice, crisp copy, 'cause this sucker is suitable for framing! (If you want to frame both sides, buy two issues...don't make the same mistake we did and frame the same side twice.)
