William M. Gaines’ Shoes on LIFE.com

When MAD Founder and Publisher Bill Gaines died in 1992, MAD editor John Ficarra asked his widow, Annie, if he could have Gaines’ shoes — a pair of size 13 desert boots that Gaines always wore. (Ficarra felt he had no choice since Gaines, inexplicably, cut him out of his will, despite Ficarra’s years and years of dedicated service. Sometimes staying as late as 5 P.M.) But Ficarra showed no bitterness and immediately had the shoes bronzed and proudly displayed them on his desk. Recently, LIFE.com found out about the shoes and asked if they could include them in their “Shoes of the Very Famous” photo gallery. The collection, which includes the footwear of Princess Di, Derek Jeter and the 18th century Pope Clement XIII, can be found here!

Birthday milestones: seventeen is when you get to drive, eighteen is when you get to vote and, apparently, nineteen is when you get to announce to the whole world that you smoke “too much f—kin’ weed!”
Now that she dropped this bombshell at her birthday party, will the former Hannah Montana star’s career go up in smoke? We don’t know, but if it does, we’re sure she'll inhale.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore Split. We Never Saw it Coming.
Like most Americans, we were SHOCKED to learn than Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore had filed for divorce! We always thought that they would spend the rest of their lives together…well, the rest of Demi’s life anyway. (Let’s be honest, Ashton’s gonna outlive her by a decade or three.) Anyway, here’s a look back to 2003, when their love was new and wonderful as if made in heaven, and only the most cynical of cynics were starting to say that their May/December relationship was completely doomed.

The MAD Strip Club — Coombs & Coombs: Notepad
A schism grows in the MAD offices. Some of us partial to Coombs, while the rest of us are especially fond of Coombs. Boy oh boy, you should see the brawls we get into!

Spy vs. Spy Art Competition at SCAD
One of the highlights of the “SCAD MAD MAD MAD Weekend,” hosted last weekend by the Southeastern Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society at the Savannah College of Art and Design, was a “Spy vs. Spy” competition organized by Anthony Fisher, Chairman of the school’s Sequential Arts Department. Students were instructed to immerse themselves in the work of “Spy” creator Antonio Prohias, and then come up with their best black-and-white take on the eternal antagonists. Sixteen entries made the finals, which were then judged on Friday by the event’s guests of honor, MAD legends Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Nick Meglin, Paul Coker, Sergio Aragonés, and Tom Richmond, as well as MAD Art Director Sam Viviano. Here are the three winners:
