Tips on How to Better Enjoy the St. Patrick's Day Parade

DUBLIN YOUR FUN DEPT.

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and all across the nation, parades will be held to celebrate this great occasion. But not all parades are created equal — in fact, some can be downright boring. So it’s up to you to make sure you get the most out of standing on a curb, watching a bunch of people wearing green stumble by. And we’re here to help.

Signs You’re Suffering from March Madness

CLASSIC MAD DEPT.

It starts with 64...then there’s 32...then 16...then 8...until it’s finally down to just four survivors! Some new reality show? Perhaps! But we’re talking about America’s inexplicable obsession with the college basketball tournament! How about you? Are you addicted to hardwood? Maybe you'll recognize the symptoms in this classic piece by John Caldwell from MAD #403

Afghanistan: 'No Country for Our Men'

THE WAR ON ERROR DEPT.

After peeing on Taliban corpses, accidentally burning the Koran and a tragic shooting spree by a deranged soldier, it’s not exactly shocking that America has failed to win the hearts and minds of the Afghani people. Today, Afghan President Hamid Karzai asked President Obama to get U.S. troops out of his country NOW! Like Vietnam and more recently, Iraq, we’ve seen this movie before.

'The Godfather' Turns 40

MAD CLASSICS DEPT.

It was 40 years ago today that the movie The Godfather debuted, ushering in an era of stand-up comics stuffing cotton in their mouths to do bad Marlon Brando impressions and providing hack screenwriters an endless supply of classic lines to reference (READ: steal) in their movies. (“Make him an offer he can’t refuse,” “Leave the gun, take the cannoli,” “It’s not personal, it’s just business.”) Not to be left out of the fun, MAD published a spoof of "Don Minestrone” and his loving (but violent) family in MAD #155, December 1972.

Found: Vintage MAD-Inspired Postcard

MERCH AND DESTROY DEPT.

This shouldn’t come as any kind of surprise, but it’s a fact that anyone who works at MAD doesn’t have much of a life. Which means that even on a day off, we still manage to think about MAD! But sometimes that’s a good thing. Like when we come across a cool, weird piece of MAD memorabilia (MADorabilia, if you will) — like this old 3-D postcard made in 1958 by Eden Plastics Corp of NY. Just look at that weird knock-off Alfred! If you have images of vintage MAD/Alfred E. Neuman stuff (even if it’s bootlegs), share it with us in the comments section!

Kony 2012 "Culturemakers" Respond!

A POKE IN THE REPLIES DEPT.

With over 100 million pageviews and counting, Kony 2012 — a half-hour long call for action against Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony — has become the biggest thing to hit the Web since Rebecca Black reminded us that Saturday follows Friday. As part of its campaign, Invisible Children, the group behind the video, is pressuring 20 superstar “culturemakers” to speak out against Kony. Most of the 20 have stayed unusually silent on the red-hot issue — until now.
